So I was looking at Her Instruments, and thinking of stealing the business model-- free-to-read serial, frequency of updates partly determined by donations. I'd like to know whether anyone here who has tried that has any input/advice/thoughts. Does it work? How do you make it work?

Any suggestions on good crowdfunding sites? What are the pros and cons of the ones you know? Have you had good or bad experiences with Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Rockethub, or any others? (I do see the directory linked earlier in this comm, but it offers only limited information on each site.)

And what sites are good for personal rather than artistic or business reasons? I've heard of GoFundMe. Are there others? Anything that doesn't take a cut (or only a minimal one) for people in dire financial straits?

I have opened up feedback on my two potential upcoming serials:

Working-joke-title Steam!Goats (A steampunk setting in a universe featuring goats as a primary mode of transportation) - A boarding-school story involving steam, magic, and teenagers.
Question post here.

Working-joke-title With a Gladiator on Top (A kink setting still very up in the air)
Question Post here

The questions, in short:
What are the top three things you'd like to see in such a serial?

What would you LEAST want to see in that story?

What setting would you like for such a story?

I've finished this weekend's channeling session with Horus and Bast. The follow-up post is now live.

One thing I'd like to talk about here is developing the Hero's Deck.

As many know who read Tarot or other oracle/wisdom cards, a given deck tends to develop or show a kind of personality as it's used and the reader becomes more familiar with the cards. Thus far the Hero's Deck is showing its to me, and I'm seeing some limitations. Basically, I find that the Hero's Deck is very good for simple readings of one or a few cards, but I'm having trouble finding ways to build multi-card readings from it as one would do with the Tarot. Things like past/present/future don't feel right because of how the deck is structured.

Structure of the Hero's Deck: There are 36 cards in 3 groups: Archetypes, Gifts, and Challenges. Unlike Tarot, where there is a storytelling structure in the Major Arcana and detail-fillers in the Minor which are given story progression via artwork, in this case the Hero's Deck is divided in such a way that three equal groups exist. There is no primary story structure already within it; you are expected to make your own with its tools.

While having specific images might help with this issue I'm having, that would also change the character of the deck, which is intended to inspire images that might be very different from the common interpretation. Artwork also doesn't change the structure of the deck, even if it might make the deck more marketable. (This is a worthy consideration: As a side discussion, do you think the deck would be more valuable with art or without it?)

I'm thinking that a whole new way to perform larger-scale readings than single-issue card draws might be needed. Some new insight to structuring one's readings that fits the Hero's Deck instead of being a copy of the way one might use the Tarot.

Would anyone have insight to share?

PayPal tells me that Horrible Unspecified Doom will befall me if I use a Donate button without being a nonprofit. I see that a lot of you use Donate buttons, as opposed to Add to Cart or other choices. I am confused.

Also, thank you, everyone here, because you are all awesome and helpful and encouraging and a lot of other things.

Is there a way to use PayPal or a similar service to handle transactions without having to reveal my legal name to everyone I know through fandom/LJ?

Hello, all. I have two more questions for you. :)

1. Does the price listed for stories mean the money you need to receive, or the money that your patrons need to pay, in cases where intermediaries such as PayPal take a cut?

2.What do you do if you write things but no one buys anything from your first batch or first several works?

Thank you.

Hello, everyone. I'm pleased to meet you all, including the ones I've already met. :) I would like to use crowdfunding as a business model for original fiction writing. However, after having read [livejournal.com profile] ysabetwordsmith's articles and taken a look at what some people are doing, while I think I have some idea of what to do, I'm still a little confused.

When you first join this community, please make an introductory post telling folks who you are and what you do.

Alrighty. :)

Are you a creative person, a donor, or both?

I'd like to be both, but for now I'm here as a creative person. And a seeker of advice.

What kind of goods or services do you offer?

Right now all I have are the things at my Etsy shop. Crocheted scrunchies, hats, and drawstring bags, and inside-decorated Moleskines, for people who dig places like [community profile] paperjournals and [livejournal.com profile] jr__nal but either that sort of decorating isn't their thing, or they don't want to stop to decorate each page. With my Moleskines you can just keep writing and have some kind of decor on every page--though you might want to switch writing instruments here and there.

Two things I'm gathering materials for but don't have the space for right now (and I'm getting ready to move from Fort Wainwright to Fort Drum so even the the zillion crocheted things I've made lately haven't gone up because they'll be shipped with my household goods and I don't know when I'll get them. The things at my Etsy shop will be brought with me in my luggage, though, so those are available for purchase any time) are Large Bead Tapestries, which will be beads made from halved toilet paper rolls that've been covered in cloth or sprayed with metallic spray paint (or both, there are lots of things I can cover them with), and string them together like part of a beaded bracelet, and those will be wall hangings. (I would appreciate if no one else grabbed onto this, 'cause I'm rather proud of it.)

Another thing I'm gathering is Frappucino bottles to make jar candles with, and I'll be experimenting with scents and colors--they won't all be coffee-colored and I took all the stickers off anyway. (This one has been done by all sorts of people in all sorts of ways so I don't mind if anyone uses this idea. I may have come up with it in a vacuum but surely others have too.)

Also, paper beads, though I'm not sure whether to sell them in packs as beads or as already-made jewelry items. Suggestions?

What I'd like to do is have a booth at the Fort Drum post exchange during the holidays, and I'll be looking up prices as soon as we arrive (hopefully this month!), so I'd ask for help setting that up once I had the info, but here's where I ask for advice--how do you think I should go about soliciting donations? Donate $5, get a scrunchie, donate 10, get a coin purse, donate $20, get a hat? 'Cause I can do that, and even take custom orders regarding color. Once I start the other projects I can give out those, too. (And if you want to go ahead and donate now, the PayPal email address is [email protected].)

What kind do you like to read or view?

I like the creative people that have increasingly cool gifts to go with increased donations. It's always more fun to get not just the warm fuzzy feeling of helping a struggling artist (or in my case, a broke-but-not-poor junior enlisted army wife :P) but something that struggling artist made. For example, I want to donate to this lady because the stuff she's offering is cool and useful. :)

Why do you like crowdfunded creativity?

Because the first world totally needs micro-lending too! And it's nice to give the big banks the big finger (or two fingers, depending on your region). ;)

Apologies for my rambling. Nice to meet y'all!

What kinds of perks get your attention and encourage you to dig into your hard-earned cash? I'm trying to figure out how to adapt crowdfunding to my photography and am interested in knowing what people like, what is The Shiny that encourages them to dig in. And what are realistic levels to ask for when you're a budding artist?

You don't have to actively support crowdfunding or photography or crowdfunded photography if you want to answer.

I figure prints are always a possibility. The 2 biggest issues with that right now are cost of postage & getting time to ship (I live in New Zealand) & our printer, while a good photo printer, sometimes puts marks on the back of the paper and I'm afraid this might turn people off.

I like [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's use of posting a few pictures in her journal and then offering to post others if she gets donations. I usually upload my picts to Webshots for people to see/download as screensavers/send as e-cards. I could hold a few prize ones back when I do this and offer to upload them if I get donations. When I upload my Webshots I'll usually upload a few of the better ones to my Weblogimages account and post them in my journal.

I could also see if there's a way create a special album at Webshots and lock it to only certain people. I don't know if it's possible and this would require my audience getting a Webshots account.

Or I could make a special Donor filter and post the picts on that on my DW/LJ.

What are your thoughts?

And come to think of it, how do you make a Paypal donation button?

(ETA: Sorry [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith, not sure what tag would fit best for this so I've put networking but feel free to tell me what to change it to!)
