Hello! I'm hosting a Spooktober Prompt Call on my journal. I've described the theme in more detail, with examples, in the post linked. This is my chance to shape stories together with readers and write what you wish you could read.

Last year I wrote three stories for Spooktober '22, which you can read here. I hope to write many more stories this year. If I didn't get to your prompt last year, do comment again this year.

Prompting continues from now until Halloween, the end of October.

What I write will be posted for everyone to read. Right now, I accept tips in the form of Dreamwidth Points, and appreciate signalboosting to bring me more readers.

I hope to see new prompters and readers, and receive plenty of ideas to write plenty of stories.

Hello! I'm hosting a collaborative creative space on my journal. This is my chance to shape stories together with readers and write what you wish you could read. The theme is Spooktober. I've described the theme in more detail, with examples, in the Prompt Call on my journal. Prompting continues from now until Halloween.

What I write will be posted for everyone to read. Right now, funding is donation-based, and I will link my Tip Jar in relevant posts. Everyone who boosts the signal and shares word of the Spooktober prompt call gets to nominate a theme/topic for future prompt calls.

I hope to see new prompters and readers, and receive plenty of ideas to write plenty of stories.

More than once I've talked myself out of posting this, for two reasons. Impostor Syndrome being the first, and the second being the fact I am terrible at asking for any kind of help (thank you for that bad lesson, childhood - it really isn't at all helpful).

If you've seen me around here then you know what I do, but if you don't then I write stories for 'The Many Worlds'. Not enough, as far as my mind is concerned, due to how complicated life has been for the last 18 months. In short my long term partner had some serious mental health issues we're slowly getting through - and it took a lot of energy to use through it all. During that time my energy all went into my main earner - ghostwriting. However, even with all that energy going into it, there have still been months when it's been a struggle to find it. Last month was bad. I'm burnt out, almost permanently exhausted, and trying to work through too much alone.

That's why I'm posting here. 'The Many Worlds' went through some changes. The website has a different URL, I took everything down and started from scratch, and I'm slowly trying to build up the Patreon. For the moment I'm focusing on grocery money. We spend around £150 ($200) a month on food, although I have been stretching this out to around six weeks, and this means having a lot of the same dinners over and over. Before my partner's savings dwindled to almost nothing he was the one who paid for those groceries. Now I'm taking that on, along with rent, because, for the moment, he's not in a place where he can work. (I am working on getting him to the doctor again, but that's an added complication, and another draw on my energy.)

Patreon, I hope, will become that grocery fund. I'm here to ask for patrons. For every two new patrons I'm going to post something newly edited up at the website. That's at any level. I also have a Ko-fi, so if that's something you'd prefer to do I'm also going to post something for every two coffees. If I reach $50 at Patreon then I've got a couple of ideas as to what I'm going to do for it, but no definite decisions yet. From there I'm going to do something for every $50 point after that - and if I reach the $200, making it possible for me to get groceries next month without having to stress out about it, I'm probably going to cry.

Signal boosting is also much appreciated. Let me know about your boost here, and I'll post a snippet of one of the newer stories I've been working on, or some world building, or something from one of the characters I know the best. This can be DW/LJ, Twitter, or anywhere else you happen to have a place to boost. (One thing for each boost, so boost three times and get three things.)

With work going well, albeit slowly, on the Many Worlds I have a new goal for the Patreon. I'd like to be making $50 a month by the end of the year, as that will give me a tiny bit of extra time to be able to write more for me, as all of my time and energy has been going into ghosted work.

I've been editing the next part of Case of the Counterfeit Enchantments, so that should be going up at some point in this week. Along with this I've been going through some other stories, trying to get a bit more in depth with the world building, and it's been interesting. There are some things I've got no idea what was coming next, which will make it even more fun to write.

Should I reach $50 then I hope to be able to get back to doing semi-regular prompt calls. I'm probably going to start off by season, and slowly build up to more. If I get more than $50 it'll be even easier to put more time into writing.

There is also the Ko-fi if you'd like to help me out, but not pay a specific monthly amount.

It's been a long time since I posted here, and I think the last time I did it was probably with my old account ([personal profile] k_a_webb). The last year has been complicated, to say the least, but things are slowly becoming more normal. Making a long story very short my long term partner had some incredibly complicated mental health issues. That doesn't mean things are exactly easier, as, although he has got through the worst of it all, there are still problems. However I am working on getting back to the Many Worlds after not having the time or the energy to for a long time.

The website has had a change - it's now The Many Worlds. I also have my Patreon, and I'm over on Ko-Fi. For now things are going slowly. I'm working on editing some of the older stories I have, planning out new things, and just getting back to writing on a regular basis (for the Many Worlds, rather than just clients). It's nice to be working on them again, as I have missed them.

I'm selling a number of 3000-word (and potentially longer!) short science fiction/fantasy stories or scenes, inspired by prompts, for $30 each. These funded scenes will become part of the Shared Worlds canon, and the first ten purchased scenes will each be accompanied by a sketch by Oakland-area artist Davin Yant. The purchaser will receive the original sketch on a postcard.

This will raise funds for the Foundations educational system, a San Francisco Bay Area group focused on community-building, personal development, education, and safety within the Alternative Sexuality and Diverse Genders and Sexualities communities.

Read more and purchase a prompt here!

I had a lot of fun with the Shared Worlds prompt call when I did it, and I'm looking forward to what will come from this fundraiser.

Hello, all!

For the next few days, I'm doing a prompt call at my journal. Free snippets of fiction for prompting, and flash fiction/scenes of potential longer stories for donations.

As an added bonus, stories written for donations will become part of my Shared Worlds project, which aims to create a body of work that encourages transformative works and supports authors who want to write them commercially.

I have opened up feedback on my two potential upcoming serials:

Working-joke-title Steam!Goats (A steampunk setting in a universe featuring goats as a primary mode of transportation) - A boarding-school story involving steam, magic, and teenagers.
Question post here.

Working-joke-title With a Gladiator on Top (A kink setting still very up in the air)
Question Post here

The questions, in short:
What are the top three things you'd like to see in such a serial?

What would you LEAST want to see in that story?

What setting would you like for such a story?

Official word is that the Rhysling Award now accepts nominations of crowdfunded or self-published poetry. (In several previous years, staff ruled out crowdfunded poetry as being self-published. Then it was rediscovered that some previous Rhysling winners were self-published poems, so the rules were clarified to allow self-published poems. I asked about crowdfunding specifically and it's eligible!)

The Rhysling Award is run by the Science Fiction Poetry Association. SFPA members have the right to nominate and vote in the Rhysling Award, and also receive a copy of the annual voting anthology, which is an excellent source of top speculative poems. If you enjoy crowdfunded poetry, consider nominating/voting for your favorite examples so as to raise awareness of crowdfunding as a successful venue for poetry.

Strange Horizons is having a fundraiser.  This weekly speculative fiction magazine is largely crowdfunded in this fashion. Donors get prizes -- things like books and artwork by the authors and artists of Strange Horizons.  I've had several poems published in this magazine, though nothing recently.

Paul Jessup is crowdfunding a novel to be serialized. See the Kickstarter page for Spiral Suns. Donor perks include bookmarks, ebooks, signed hardcopies, getting to name a character, and other fun stuff.

The August 2011 Muse Fusion is now open. Come leave us some prompts, sponsor material, or just hang out and watch the fun. If you're not familiar with Torn World, generic prompts (like "first snow" or "hope") are fine too. If you'd like to explore our science fantasy shared-world setting, "Start Here."

Two actors have been chosen to compete for a character role in the steampunk show Aether Dancer.  Read about Ryan Fischer and Luke Marty on the blog.  You can show your support for one or the other by making a donation on the IndieGoGo page; one dollar counts as one vote.  Vote early, vote often!  (The project has 11 days left.)  The actor who earns the most for the show will get the role, thus letting fans indicate who they really want to see more of.

The July Muse Fusion is now live over in LJ-Torn-World.  Please drop by and give us some prompts. Not sure what to suggest? Try browsing characters or cultures on the Torn World site. Note that this Muse Fusion will be running all the way through Monday, and closing on Tuesday morning, in hopes of catching some spillover traffic from the LiveJournal Spotlight on LJ-Crowdfunding which starts July 18. You've got a little extra time to stretch your creativity this month.

SQUEE! [personal profile] meeks (who is meeksp on LiveJournal) has posted the rough sketch for my poem "Shine On." This is a poem about a paladin meeting a peasant girl; the scene shows Shahana the Paladin holding a fallen star. I love the contrast of light and shadow, and check out the tiny rays of starlight fanning upwards.

View the sketch on LiveJournal or on Dreamwidth, and comment where you prefer. Feedback is welcome, and if enough people comment, this sketch will get another round of work done on it. Comments to the artist also put you into a draw for a free icon. Donations can also activate more work on a sketch, and help support the artist. (Look at the cute white hat -- with ears! -- in the tip button.) Linkbacks are another way to show your support: there's a monthly contest where the sketch with the most linkbacks will get worked on more.

In related news, I have written three more poems in the "Path of the Paladins" series, based on prompts from my donors. They are currently voting on which one to show you. (The extras will get listed on the serial poetry page, and become available for sponsorship.) The new poem will probably appear Wednesday evening.

The July Poetry Fishbowl is now open in my LiveJournal. Come give me prompts about low fantasy. I'll be writing poetry all day.

This is an advance announcement for the Tuesday, July 5 2011 Poetry Fishbowl. This time the theme will be "low fantasy." I'll be soliciting ideas for characters of minor heroes, antiheroes, sidekicks and second fiddles, ordinary villagers, henchmen, characters in that grey area between hero and villain, broken or mismade magical artifacts, unusual adventuring gear, ordinary items used to save the day, small-scale conflicts, side scenes from epic events, ways in which epics affect ordinary people, scenes that show off the gritty tone of low fantasy, solutions that don't involve magic, places where something important happened long ago, classic low-fantasy settings such as sleepy villages or deep forests, and poetic forms in particular.

What is "low fantasy" anyway?  It's usually contrasted with high fantasy, and can mean: small-scale rather than large-scale events, minor rather than major heroes, less rather than more magic, also sometimes stories set in a close analog of our world rather than an obviously different fantasy world, ambiguous rather than polarized morality, and/or a tone more gritty than glowing.  Low fantasy is about saving a village rather than a country or a world, about getting one or two people's lives to work halfway decently, about solving problems with the gear on your back rather than an army's worth, and dealing with problems that don't really have good solutions.  In the rain.  So for instance, the Fiorenza series mainly concerns life in a quiet little village, with occasional preternatural problems that get solved more by wit than magic.

If you're interested, mark the date on your calendar, and please hold actual prompts until the "Poetry Fishbowl Open" post next week. Meanwhile, if you want to help with promotion, please feel free to link back here or repost this on your blog.

Writing is usually considered a solitary pursuit. One exception to this is a fascinating exercise called a "fishbowl." This has various forms, but all of them basically involve some kind of writing in public, usually with interaction between author and audience. A famous example is Harlan Ellison's series of "stories under glass" in which he sits in a bookstore window and writes a new story based on an idea that someone gives him. Writing classes sometimes include a version where students watch each other write, often with students calling out suggestions which are chalked up on the blackboard for those writing to use as inspiration.

I'm going to host a Poetry Fishbowl on my blog on Tuesday, July 5.  I'll be soliciting ideas for thematic characters, objects, plots, settings, and poetic forms in particular. Chances are I'll spend a good chunk of the day, from afternoon to evening or more, alternating between this site and doing stuff offline so my back doesn't weld itself to the chair.

Perks: I will post at least one of the resulting fishbowl poems on the blog for everyone to enjoy, and an extra one if there's at least one new prompter or donor. The rest will be available for audience members to buy, and whatever's left over will go into my archive for magazine submission. If donations total $150+ then I'll write an extra series poem after the Poetry Fishbowl, and post it for free. Everyone will get to vote which series gets a new poem. This month's donors will get some kind of input into the poem's content, such as prompts.

If you enjoy my poetry -- or if you just love poetry in general, or want to promote interest in low fantasy -- please mark the fishbowl date on your calendar. Drop by and give me some ideas, comment on the posted poetry, encourage people to come look, whatever tickles your fancy. I hope to see you then!

This Kickstarter project is raising money to produce the next Triangulations anthology. The sponsoring editor recently passed away, leaving the anthology in need of additional support. This anthology series is a good source of speculative fiction.
